altSPRINGFIELD, IL Legislation co-sponsored by State Senator Maggie Crotty (D-Oak Forest) is designed to help veterans’ who are in long-term care facilities have an easier time voting in elections.

Senate Bill 98 would require election authorities to expand their in-person absentee voting operations at federally operated veterans’ homes, hospitals and other long-term care facilities. The bill applies to veterans’ hospitals and facilities in Chicago, Danville, Hines, Marion and North Chicago.

A new law sponsored by State Sen. Kwame Raoul will require candidates for Governor and Lieutenant Governor to campaign jointly beginning with the state’s nominating petition process in future elections.

The law will provide substantial reform and accountability to elections for the Lt. Governor post which has come under high scrutiny since candidates Scott Lee Cohen and Jason Plummer won Illinois’ 2010 primary.

SPRINGFIELD, IL The Illinois Senate passed a measure today aimed at increasing voter turnout. Senate Bill 2925, sponsored by State Senator Michael Frerichs (D Champaign), requires election authorities to conduct grace period registration, grace period voting, and early voting at state public universities, colleges, and community colleges.

"This legislation will provide polling locations on campuses and increase voter turnout," Frerichs said. "Currently, there is no polling place at the University of Illinois for grace period voting, which creates barriers for students wishing to vote but are unable because of lack of timely transportation or busy schedules."

"This legislation will engage students and increase voter turnout," Jacobs said. "I am behind this legislation because I feel we need to instill the duty for voting into young people all over the state."

The IL State Senate passed legislation this week, offered by State Sen. Kwame Raoul, which seeks to pair lt. governor and governor candidates beginning before their party’s primary election.

House Bill 5820 would require candidates for Governor and Lieutenant Governor to campaign jointly beginning with the state’s nominating petition process. Running-mates would circulate petitions as a ticket and be voted on together in the state’s primary. Currently, candidates for governor and lieutenant governor run separately in the primary and then run as a ticket in the general election.

Springfield, IL —The IL State Senate passed legislation today, offered by State Sen. Kwame Raoul, which seeks to pair lt. governor and governor candidates beginning before their party’s primary election.

Senate Bill 377 would require candidates for Governor and Lieutenant Governor to campaign jointly beginning with the state’s nominating petition process. Running-mates would circulate petitions as a ticket and be voted on together in the state’s primary.

“During previous primary cycles, lt. governor candidates in both parties chose not to endorse a candidate for governor due to weariness of political repercussions. Under this law candidates would have to be honest about not only who they think can win but who they’d like to serve with,” Raoul said.
