Representatives from the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR), the Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA), and Chase Bank were on hand to provide mortgage relief counseling and foreclosure assistance to attendees. According to IDFPR, 239 people were assisted by counselors at the event. "With so many families losing their homes and many more struggling to keep up with mortgage payments, it is critically important that we reach out to the community to provide this assistance," Wilhelmi said. "I am grateful to everyone who participated in this event. It is my hope that outreach programs like this will provide viable alternatives to families struggling during this economic crisis." Mortgage relief counseling at the event focused primarily on educating homeowners of their rights under the Homeowner Protection Act. "Many homeowners are unsure or unaware of their rights and protections under the law," Holmes said. "Our goal was to provide homeowners with the information necessary to make informed decisions about their mortgages. The individuals who attended this event can breathe a little easier knowing the resources that are available for their protection." More counseling events will be held across the state for the remainder of the year. Individuals interested in learning more about the program should visit
