Raoul’s Universal Fare Card Proposal becomes Law (AUDIO)

MetraTrainModernizations will Benefit Passengers, Improve System

CHICAGO, IL – Governor Pat Quinn signed a proposal sponsored by State Senator Kwame Raoul (D-Chicago) Thursday to give Chicagoland commuters friendlier options. House Bill 3597 will create at universal fare card for CTA, Metra and PACE riders by 2015, along with other helpful modernizations to the mass transit system.

"I was glad to team up with Alderman Will Burns to pass this legislation and I am pleased Governor Quinn has authorized it," Senator Raoul said. "In order for people to succeed in the Chicago Metropolitan area, they need access to affordable and efficient public transportation. Our commuters deserve a 21st century mass transportation system that simplifies transportation from their homes to places of employment, shopping destinations, educational institutions and health care providers. These improvements will inevitably contribute toward a boost in ridership and reduction of traffic congestion."

With these updates in motion, Chicagoland commuters can rest assured that public transportation will continue to improve in the coming years. Not only do these reforms help working Illinois families, but they will make the Chicago area even more attractive to tourists, leading to more local revenues.

Highlights of the Mass Transit Reforms:

  • Establishes a Universal Fare Card for CTA, Metra and PACE riders by 2015
  • Initiates steps toward providing free wireless internet on buses and trains
  • Provides constantly updated, internet-based train arrival information by 2012
  • Prepares for the installation of automated external defibrillators on Metra trains
