Noland’s Hunger Relief Initiative Becomes Law

Elgin, IL Earlier today, the governor signed into law State Senator Michael Noland’s (D-Elgin) plan to strengthen statewide hunger relief efforts. Senate Bill 1544 creates a Hunger Relief Fund that will finance grants for food banks throughout the state of Illinois. Administered by the Illinois Department of Human Services, this new fund will only be used for hunger reliefpurchasing desperately needed food items for families that are experiencing hard times.

"No family should have to worry about where they will get their next meal""No family should have to worry about where they will get their next meal," Noland said. "This new fund will help the state take a more active role in supporting food banks and other frontline agents in the fight against hunger."

The legislation also creates a tax check-off to encourage Illinois residents to contribute to the Hunger Relief Fund. Next year, when Illinoisans are filling out their income tax returns, they will have the opportunity to contribute as much as they would like to this fund.

"I would like to encourage everyone who has the money to spare to consider contributing to this fund," Noland said. "Helping make sure all of Illinois’ children and elderly have enough to eat is a very worthy cause."

According to the United States Department of Agriculture, 9.5 percent of Illinois households face food insecurity, and a private study by America’s Second Harvest revealed that 15.4 percent of Illinois’ children can’t be sure of their next meal. Senator Noland has tirelessly worked to lower these statistics, repeatedly introducing legislation to help combat hunger.
