Noland Pushes for Green Jobs, Renewable Energy

SPRINGFIELD, Ill –Senator Michael Noland (D-Elgin) today helped pass legislation allowing Illinois counties to produce and sell renewable energy if local voters approve creation of a Renewable Energy Production District.

“Illinois has great economic potential if we allow local government to produce and sell locally-created green energy,” Noland said. “The counties who pursue Renewable Energy Production Districts will create jobs and increase their revenues, as well as establishing local sources for future energy needs.”

Senate Bill 1316 provides that, if local voters approve, a county can create the district. The county board would appoint a board of trustees, build and manage a renewable energy facility, sell the energy to area residents and businesses, and keep the proceeds in the county.

“Renewable power generation is so important to Illinois’ economic and energy future, creating new jobs and lessening our reliance on non-renewable sources,” Noland said. “Whether a county chooses to use its wind, solar, or hybrid fuel potential, it will boost their revenue and resources for their residents.”

The Senator has been engaged in several bills related to green energy and environmental improvement in the past, and is co-sponsoring another bill in the Senate to broaden the Electronic Products Recycling and Reuse Act, Senate Bill 2106.

Noland co-sponsored Senate Bill 1316, which passed on third reading in the Senate today. It now moves to the House for consideration.
