Munoz bill to create Iraqi Freedom License Plates signed into law

Image of Operation Iraqi Freedom Logo.Springfield, Illinois Legislation sponsored by State Senator Tony Munoz (D-Chicago) has been signed into law by Governor Pat Quinn that will allow the Secretary of State (SoS) to issue license plates in support of our troops fighting in Operation Iraqi Freedom. "I believe we should do everything in our power to support our veterans," said Munoz. "These new license plates will allow people to express their support while also providing funds to help sustain them and their families."

House Bill 853 will allow the SoS to issue Operation Iraqi Freedom license plates to Illinois residents. An applicant will have to pay a $15 fee for the original issuance of the plate in addition to the regular registration fee. These dollars will then be deposited into the SoS Special License Plate Fund.

This legislation also provides that beginning in 2011, the standard vehicle registration fee will be reduced by 50% for any Illinois vehicle owner who was on active duty as a member of the Armed Forces and stationed outside of the United States for a minimum of 90 days.

In addition, this bill will allow any Illinois resident in the Armed Forces that has been stationed outside the US for a period of 6 months or longer, and has had to place their vehicle in storage during the time they served, to be entitled to a credit for the time they were deployed when they renew the registration.
