Senator Munoz resolution to recognize disabled officers

Springfield, Illinois State Senator Tony Munoz (D-Chicago) is sponsoring a resolution that will honor and recognize the sacrifice disabled Peace Officers have made protecting our communities.

"There are over 900 peace officers that have been disabled in the line of duty in our state," stated Senator Munoz. "There is currently a day to honor those who have given their lives, but I believe it is also important to honor those who have been injured and disabled while serving the citizens of Illinois."

Senate Resolution 52 designates the first Wednesday in May as Disabled Peace Officers Recognition Day in Illinois, recognizing the ongoing bravery and sacrifice of peace officers living with disabilities they have received in the line of duty. This legislation encourages the citizens of Illinois to observe the day of recognition with civic remembrances to acknowledge gratitude for their sacrifices and service.

Police officers, deputies, and correctional officers are at risk of injury and assault nearly every day on the job and every year approximately 50 officers are disabled in the line of duty.

Peace officers can experience financial loss as well as loss of peer support and status in the community when they are injured on the job and cannot return to work. This specific profession is one where health, strength, and ability to perform is prized and not being able to continue after an injury can have great psychological consequences.

This legislation unanimously passed out of the Illinois Senate State Government and Veterans Affairs Committee and now goes to the full Senate for consideration.
