Redistricting Panel To Discuss Voting Rights Act

As the 2010 Census draws near, an Illinois Senate panel will convene to ensure that segments of the minority population aren’t lost in the redistricting process Tuesday.

The hearing comes at the request of Illinois Campaign for Political Reform and other minority-interest groups aimed at ensuring that the state complies with the Voting Rights Act.

"As a legislator representing diverse communities of interest in Chicago, I understand the importance of tearing down obstacles to democracy and protecting minority voters," said State Sen. Kwame Raoul (D - Chicago) who chairs the Senate’s Redistricting Committee. "I’m glad to honor the Illinois Campaign for Political Reform’s request and eager to hear the opinions of those who seek to ensure that the voices of minorities are heard."

"The map-making process is critical to allowing voters to choose representatives who reflect their districts' diversity," said Whitney Woodward of the Illinois Campaign for Political Reform. "Improving Illinois' redistricting process and ensuring that it adheres to the Voting Rights Act are issues which should concern every citizen."

The hearing will include testimony from various groups including the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, the National Urban League and Mexican American Legal Defense & Educational Fund. Other minority interest groups have also been invited to offer input.

"The Voting Rights Act of 1965 provides a critical tool for people across the country to participate in the democratic process," said State Sen. Iris Martinez (D Chicago) who also serves as a member of the Redistricting Committee. "The 2010 Census gives communities of interest the opportunity to be accurately counted and it’s my hope that stakeholders ensure they have accurate representation after the map-drawing process has concluded."

The hearing will take place Tuesday, December 8, 2009 at Chicago-Kent College of Law located at 555 West Adams Street in Chicago at 11am. The public is welcome to offer public comment.
