State Senator Steve Landek goes back to school as "Principal for a Day" at Heritage Middle School

landek-Picture014-102011-600x400BERWYN, IL– Illinois State Senator Steve Landek (D–Bridgeview) earlier today took part in the Illinois Principal Association’s "Principal for a Day" program at Heritage Middle School in Berwyn.

Senator Landek spent the day under the supervision of Heritage Middle School Principal Leslie Hodes. Together, they toured the school, visited classrooms, spoke with parents and teachers, and met with students to talk about the importance of education and what life is like at the state capitol as a state senator.

Senator Landek appointed to Local Government Consolidation Commission

landek-75x75BRIDGEVIEW, IL – Illinois State Senator Steve Landek (D–Bridgeview) has been recently appointed by Senate President John J. Cullerton to serve on the Local Government Consolidation Commission.

Currently, Illinois has 6,993 units of local government, more than any other state in the nation. Most units of government have the ability to levy taxes, which can lead to increased property taxes. In response to this issue, the General Assembly overwhelmingly passed House Bill 268 (Public Act 97-0316), which created a seventeen-member commission to study the entire structure of local governments, including their organization, powers, jurisdictions, and functions.

Landek, joint committee holds hearing on Metra cuts, reduced services

landek-75x75CHICAGO, IL – Illinois State Senator Steve Landek (D–Bridgeview), member of the Senate Local Government committee, participated in a joint-hearing with members of the Senate Transportation committee last Friday to review Metra’s budget proposal to reduce services and possibly raise fares.

"The hearing gave us the opportunity to sit down and discuss Metra’s proposals to fill their $100 million budget deficit," Senator Landek said. "Before Metra moves along with their proposed service reductions and rate hikes, it’s essential that they allow for public input. We need to ensure this process is open and transparent to minimize the impact on all Metra riders."

State Senator Steve Landek reacts to the Governor’s budget address

SPRINGFIELD, IL Illinois State Senator Steve Landek (DBridgeview) released the following statements regarding the governor’s budget address:

There’s no question that we are still in the midst of some very difficult times. We didn’t get into this overnight and it’s going to take some time before we can completely get out of this hole. To ensure economic stability in our state, we must remain committed to eliminating inefficiencies, living within our means, and fulfilling our duty to our state’s vendors by paying our backlog of unpaid bills immediately.
