"I’ve heard from many of the residents of my district that the sales tax increase really hurt them," Kotowski said. "Working families watch those extra dollars and cents trickle out of their bank accounts every time they go shopping. Retailers have seen drops in sales. We needed a change." Kotowski sponsored the new state law that enabled the Cook County Board to provide sales tax relief. Kotowski’s legislation, House Bill 4625, lowered the number of votes needed to override the Cook County Board President’s veto. County Board President Stroger has vetoed every attempt to lower the sales tax, and until today the County Board always fell a single vote short of overturning Stroger’s veto. "I believe lowering the board’s veto override threshold has spurred new action on this issue," Kotowski said. "Lowering the veto override threshold has restored fairness and democracy to the Cook County Board." Before the passage of Kotowski’s law, the Cook County Board needed a four-fifths majority to override the board president’s veto "During these tough economic times Cook County residents cannot afford this sales tax "Like most other residents of Cook County, I will be happy to see us return to a more reasonable sales tax," Kotowski said. "The people of the county have spoken, and the county commissioners have demonstrated that they have heard the taxpayers loud and clear."
