Jones looks to advance improved cemetery regulation

SPRINGFIELD, IL – State Senator Emil Jones III (D - 14th District) provided testimony in front of the Senate Executive Committee today to discuss comprehensive legislation that will greatly improve the regulation and oversight of cemeteries in Illinois. The subject matter hearing was called at Sen. Jones’ request to begin moving the legislation forward.

Stemming from an investigation into the management practices at Burr Oak Cemetery earlier this year, Jones is proposing legislation to establish stricter standards for the care and operation of cemeteries.

"The tragic events surrounding Burr Oak Cemetery can never be repeated again," Jones said. "Those who have been laid to rest and their families deserve more professional and sensitive care. I intend to bring forward new guidelines and restrictions that will ensure cemeteries are handling everyday operations with the utmost concern and integrity."

The legislation proposed by Jones will require cemetery owners, cemetery managers, and cemetery employees to become licensed by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR). Cemetery owners will be required to "reasonably maintain" their properties or risk penalties from the state.

"It is reasonable for families to want to lay their loved ones to rest in a proper burial site," Jones said. "The licensing process will ensure that professional care is being administered." Jones plans to introduce his bill at the beginning of the spring legislative session.

"Many of the parties who are interested in improving the current laws are on board with this proposal," said Jones. "I am committed to working with all parties in the coming months to ensure that their concerns have been addressed and we can move forward with improved, comprehensive cemetery regulation. I will continue working on this issue until we have sound policy in place."
