"Today, the people of Illinois were reminded of the economic crisis we all face," Jacobs said. "Every day people are losing jobs, businesses are closing doors, and parents constantly worry about their children’s school funding. The people of this state need our help and I am confident that Democrat and Republican members of the General Assembly and the Governor can work together to solve the problem." As part of his proposal, the Governor suggested cutting nearly $2 billion from spending, including decreasing education funding by $1.3 billion. Governor Quinn also stated that these cuts would not be necessary if the General Assembly is willing to pass a tax increase for new revenue. "I realize that cuts are part of the process," Jacobs said. "Some cuts are painful, but necessary for the good of the state. However, I feel that cutting funding for education is a mistake. By limiting funding for our schools we are losing good teachers, closing facilities, and cramping students into small classrooms. Students are the future of this state and I feel that cutting their funding is cutting away their future." "It is going to be a tough couple of months with many difficult decisions," Jacobs said. "I look forward to working with my colleagues to solve this problem and fix Illinois."
