Jacobs Advances Expansion in Election Participation

SPRINGFIELD, IL The Illinois Senate passed a measure today aimed at increasing voter turnout. Senate Bill 2925, co-sponsored by Senator Mike Jacobs (D Moline), requires election authorities to conduct grace period registration, grace period voting, and early voting at state public universities, colleges, and community colleges.

"This legislation will engage students and increase voter turnout," Jacobs said. "I am behind this legislation because I feel we need to instill the duty for voting into young people all over the state."

Senate Bill 2925 creates new sections in the Election Code requiring registration and voting on campuses. The campuses will be required to provide a central location to conduct grace period registration, grace period voting, and early voting.

Grace period registration and voting is the only way to register or change an address or name after the regular registration period ends. It is also the only way to vote if an individual is not registered or if the voter’s registration in not up to date. Participants of grace period registration vote immediately after registration.

The bill also requires public universities, public colleges, and public community colleges to make space available for lection-related activities. These activities would be open to qualified residents including students, staff members, and faculty members.

"Young people are the future of this state and we need to provide them with every opportunity to get involved," Jacobs said. "I am confident in this legislation and the increased voter turnout it will bring to Illinois."

Senate Bill 2925 now moves to the Illinois House for further consideration.
