Hutchinson Reacts to Governor Quinn’s Budget Address

Springfield, IL State Senator Toi Hutchinson (D-Olympia Fields) attended Governor Pat Quinn’s annual budget address today, which was given to a joint body of State Representatives and Senators in the Illinois House chambers.

"I was happy to hear Governor Quinn’s ideas for providing essential state services during our continued fiscal crisis," Hutchinson said. "I am concerned, however, with the proposed cuts to human service programs that take care of our sick and elderly. These cuts appear very deep, and I worry about the effect this will have on our communities."

Hutchinson cited her concern with the proposed elimination of the Illinois Circuit Breaker Program as one such cut that could hopefully be avoided. The Illinois Circuit Breaker Program gives rebates to eligible seniors and the disabled on property taxes, license plate renewals and prescription drug coverage.

"While I am concerned about possible cuts to vital human services, I commend Governor Quinn for maintaining current funding levels for higher education. As we continue to recover from one of the worst recessions in the last fifty years, it is essential our residents are well educated and trained for our ever changing job market."

Governor Quinn’s budget proposal increases funding for the Monetary Assistance Program (MAP), which is a grant program that gives funding to lower-income students who enter higher education facilities.

"As an original member of the Responsible Government Coalition, I understand what it means to be fiscally responsible while looking out for the interests of working families. I am ready to work with the Governor and my Senate colleagues to ensure we continue to be fiscally responsible while still delivering vital state services as efficiently and effectively as we can."
