"Financial institutions have a responsibility to report any activity that may cause them to suspect that a senior is being financially defrauded," said Senator Hunter, Chairwoman of the Illinois Senate Human Services Committee. "This legislation will bring financial institutions into line with others already covered under the Elder Abuse and Neglect Act." Senate Bill 3267 would add banks or other financial institutions, or an employee of any financial institution to the list of mandated reporters of elder abuse under state law. "The financial exploitation of the elderly has been on the rise in recent years," Senator Hunter stated. "This bill will ensure that financial institutions know they have a duty to report any instance where they believe a senior is being defrauded." Through this legislation, the Department of Aging would also develop a training program on financial exploitation of the elderly that would be made available to the employees of financial institutions. This legislation passed the Senate and now goes to the House of Representatives for their consideration.
Springfield, IL – State Senator Mattie Hunter (D-Chicago) is sponsoring legislation that will add financial institutions to the list of those who are required to report elder abuse.
