Chicago, IL- Over the weekend Senator Mattie Hunter (D-Chicago) along with volunteers handed out over 1,000 turkeys and hams to low-income senior citizens in the district.
Each year Secretary Jesse White, Representative Ken Dunkin, Alderman Walter Barnett, local businessmen and others work with the Emergency Fund to raise funds for this holiday tradition. Since 1973, the Emergency Fund has helped tens of thousands of individuals who had nowhere else to go for assistance and has brought national attention to the importance of alleviating homelessness.
"For over 40 years Secretary Jesse White has helped raise money and awareness for this event, which has encouraged me over the years to join in. It’s a great way to start off the holiday season by bringing a little cheer into the lives of our seniors in my district who have been hit hard by the economic recession," Said Hunter. "By working with the Emergency Fund we have successfully raised $50,000 which allowed us to hand out 11,500 turkey or hams across the Chicago area to those in need."
The Emergency Fund works with hundreds of volunteers in supporting Chicago families and seniors. The non-profit organization works with elected officials, individuals, corporations, foundations and receives government support to provide resources and give back to the community. Chicago residents in need of emergency assistance can dial 3-1-1 and to reach the Emergency Fund.
"This is my seventh year participating in this worthwhile program. I know that many families and seniors can use the extra help this holiday season," Said Hunter, "I commend the Emergency Fund for their work as well as other elected officials that participate in this program. It is because of these organizations that our Chicago residents have a place to go when they are left with no other options and can be uplifted once again."
