Image of a wind turbine.Springfield, IL- An initiative of Illinois State Senator Mattie Hunter (D-Chicago) has been signed into law by Governor Pat Quinn which will increase economic development by providing training programs in various renewable energy fields.

"I believe it is important to do whatever it takes to put people back to work," said Senator Hunter. "Renewable energy is a relatively new field and Illinois need to be proactive in securing these types of jobs throughout the state." House Bill 852 creates the 21st Century Workforce Development Fund through the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) to promote the creation of a diverse and skilled workforce in the energy efficiency and renewable energy industries. The increase in these skilled laborers will promote increased economic development.

This fund will provide grants for any private, public, and non-profit group that provide education, training, and workforce development services to low-income individuals, educational institutions, and labor and business associations.

"It is my hope that this collective group of professionals provide the educational infrastructure we need to ensure these green companies come and stay in Illinois," said Senator Hunter. "If we can achieve this goal through this program then we can not only put people back to work, but also strengthen our economy."
