"This legislation will provide polling locations on campuses and increase voter turnout," Frerichs said. "Currently, there is no polling place at the University of Illinois for grace period voting, which creates barriers for students wishing to vote but are unable because of lack of timely transportation or busy schedules." Senate Bill 2925 creates new sections in the Election Code requiring registration and voting on campuses. The campuses will be required to provide a central location to conduct grace period registration, grace period voting, and early voting. Grace period registration and voting is the only way to register or change an address or name after the regular registration period ends. It is also the only way to vote if an individual is not registered or if the voter’s registration is not up to date. Participants of grace period registration vote immediately after registration. The bill also requires public universities, public colleges, and public community colleges to make space available for election-related activities. These activities would be open to qualified residents including students, staff members, and faculty members. "We need to offer every opportunity to all voters in our state to ensure their participation in our democracy," Frerichs said. "I feel strongly that younger voters’ voices need to be heard and that is a top priority." Senate Bill 2925 now moves to the Illinois House for further consideration.
