From The Statehouse - 02-05-10

A weekly update on issues from Illinois State Senator Gary Forby

Libraries have been an important part of our community for decades and continue to play an important role in the development of our children’s futures. Libraries provide many different types of services that can prove very beneficial during an economic downturn. As our state continues to work out of our economic hole, many people in our district will continue use libraries as a source for employment information, entertainment and other important services.

According to MSNBC, public library use has increased in Illinois by 28% over the past year. Now more than ever, many people in our district are looking to borrow a book or movie instead of purchasing them to save money. Free public internet access and wireless internet also draw people to libraries. They provide many other types of free entertainment as well including music, audio books, newspapers, magazines and video games. Tough economic times can be isolating. Public libraries can bring people together in an inclusive, supportive environment. They also serve as an important resource for people who are unemployed or need computer training to post their resume. Illinois has reached record high unemployment levels and as a result, libraries are experiencing record high attendance and usage levels too. More people are seeking employment or looking to upgrade their job skills and are relying on public libraries for vital information about job opportunities, career planning and training, small business management and other skills development. Libraries play a vital role in a child’s development as well. Studies show that increasing your child’s reading time by at least 30 minutes a day outside of school will significantly improve their reading ability and enhance their intellectual development for the future. Many libraries also show strong support for early childhood literacy by offering free children’s programs like story-times, arts and crafts programs, magic shows and other events designed to entertain and promote a child’s development.

The month of February is known as "Library Lovers Month." It is important to promote our local libraries and show our gratitude for the services they provide. Libraries have always been a staple in our Southern Illinois community and I encourage the members of our district to continue supporting them. Multiple studies show that for every $1 invested, libraries provide an economic boost of around $5. They are part of our local government’s role in the nation’s economic recovery. Unfortunately, with many libraries facing cuts throughout the state, it is getting more difficult to support the increased amount of foot traffic they are experiencing. By celebrating libraries, you are thanking the hard working individuals that help maintain them and give assistance at the library. As we head into the beginning of session this week, I will continue to promote the interests of my district and promote responsible solutions. Next week, I will be giving an overview about the progress my colleagues and I have made this session and the bills I have introduced.
