From the Statehouse - 11-13-09

A weekly update on issues from Illinois State Senator Gary Forby

The month of November gives us a lot to be thankful for. In the upcoming weeks, many families will be preparing for Thanksgiving and a number of people in my district will be spending time with family and close friends. Although we have a lot to be thankful for here in Southern Illinois, we must keep in mind those who are less fortunate during Thanksgiving and the rest of the holiday season.

A large percentage of those who happen to be less fortunate are Illinois’ veterans. Last week, we thanked them for their service to our country on Veteran’s Day. We showed our gratitude and respect for everything that they’ve done and honored their dedication to this great nation. Unfortunately, many veterans in my district are still struggling to adjust to everyday life after they return from active service. A number of retired military remain homeless or hungry. Many veterans return to Southern Illinois and do not have a place to call home, while many others don’t know where to turn for assistance. Clothing and food drives are some ways that help alleviate some of the burden that they experience.

Volunteering is very important during the holiday seasons. I have dedicated my time in the past to a number of charitable organizations and I will continue volunteering in the coming weeks. I also encourage my constituents to show their support this year and donate their time or goods towards these great causes. With unemployment levels nearing 11 percent throughout the state, these donations will have even more significance this year. These events allow citizens to provide much-needed assistance for the less fortunate during the holiday season. I ask every Southern Illinoisan to show their support for all who are in need by donating food, clothing, or other items to a local charitable organization.

Another way I continue show support for veterans is through promoting legislation. This past veto session, I sponsored a bill that encourages veterans’ organizations to show their gratitude towards retired military by constructing memorials in their honor. By sponsoring and passing House Bill 303, I helped alleviate the financial burden many of these organizations are currently feeling by exempting them from sales taxes when they construct monuments honoring Illinois’ veterans. This bill promotes job creation and also shows our patronage towards veterans in the Southern Illinois area. This bill passed the Senate and is now waiting in the House for concurrence.

I hope that everyone in Southern Illinois has a memorable and safe Thanksgiving holiday. This is a time to be with friends and family, but it is also a time to think of those who do not have some of the gifts that we take for granted every day. Please remember the veterans’ community who have shown commitment and loyalty to our nation and those less fortunate. Without these honorable men and women who sacrificed themselves, our lives would be completely different. I also wish those currently serving overseas a safe return home so they can spend future holidays with their families and close friends.
