Delgado: Next prescription drug collection day announced by the Federal Drug Enforcement Agency

delgado75x75SPRINGFIELD, IL–Illinois State Senator William Delgado (D–Chicago) announced today that the 3rd National Prescription Drug Take Back Day will be held on Saturday October 29, 2011 from  10 a.m to 2 p.m.

"During this past legislative session I passed House Bill 3090, co-sponsored in the House of Representatives by Luis Arroyo, which will permit any city, village or municipality to authorize its city hall or police to collect unused, expired or unwanted pharmaceutical drugs.  However, this new law does not take effect until January 1, 2012," stated Senator Delgado, Chairman of the Senate Public Health Committee.  "Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including the home medicine cabinet, and this legislation will aid in eliminating the access to these drugs.’’

On September 25, 2010, the DEA in cooperation with State and local law enforcement agencies conducted the first ever National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. Approximately 3,000 state and local law enforcement agencies nationwide participated in the event, and an estimated 121 tons of pills were turned in.

"According to the DEA, more than seven million Americans currently abuse prescription drugs and each day, approximately, 2,500 teens use prescription drugs to get high for the first time according to the Partnership for a Drug Free America," stated Senator Delgado.
