Legislation Assisting Disabled Business Owners is Signed into Law

Springfield, IL - Legislation sponsored by State Senator Maggie Crotty (D-Oak Forest) broadens the Business Enterprise for Minorities, Females, and Persons with Disabilities Act by expanding the definition of “disabled.” House Bill 986 adds Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis to the list of conditions that may lead to severe physical or mental disability and therefore qualify within the act. “Crohn’s Disease and ulcerative colitis are diseases that should be absolutely included in this act. They have the potential to cause terrible pain and can even limit the way a person is able to live his or her life. I am glad they are being taken more seriously and thankful to the Governor for recognizing the importance of this bill,” said Crotty.

Both Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are colon or intestine related conditions, affecting men and women equally, most commonly between the ages of 15 and 30. House Bill 986 aims to protect those with these illnesses within the Business Enterprise for Minorities, Females, and Persons with Disabilities Act.

Governor Quinn signed House Bill 986 into law this morning.
