Crotty co-sponsored bill to protect mentally ill Illinoisans signed into law

SPRINGFIELD, IL Legislation co-sponsored by State Senator Maggie Crotty (D Oak Forest) that will protect Illinoisans with mental health issues has been signed into law by Governor Pat Quinn.

House Bill 653 gives the Department of Human Services broader authority to initiate reviews and monitor community integrated living arrangements for mentally ill or disabled residents.

The bill requires agencies to conduct annual registry checks on all future and current employees, establish a waiver process and provide residents with information concerning their rights provided under the Act.

The legislation, titled "Paul’s Law", is an initiative of DHS and others to eradicate incidents of abuse and neglect at community integrated living facilities and comes on the heels of a series of bill signings to help formulate a comprehensive mental health policy in the State of Illinois.

"By working to make our mental health policy in the state work for the patients in our facilities and in home care, we are taking a step in the right direction to protect and serve mental health patients in Illinois," Senator Crotty said.
