Crotty bill to increase state use of service-disabled veteran owned small business passes Illinois Senate (AUDIO)

CLICK TO ENLARGESPRINGFIELD, IL Three percent of all state contracts will to go to veteran-owned and service disabled veteran owned businesses under legislation sponsored by State Senator Maggie Crotty (D-Oak Forest) that has passed the Illinois Senate.

"Senate Bill 1270, the first of its kind in the nation, demonstrates a full hearted, yet reasonable commitment to include our heroic entrepreneurs in the building of our State’s economy", Senator Crotty said. "Illinois has policies that encourage hiring veterans as part of any solicitation of business and employment through State government, however, it has no specific goal to provide support to businesses owned by men and women who have admirably and honorably served their country. Senate Bill 1270 will put that goal in place. It will help our brave veterans who have returned home and have started businesses to prosper and thrive in these difficult economic times. It is just a small way to say ‘thank you’ for their service and their hard work", she added.

Proponents of this legislation include the Teamsters Joint Council 25 and 65, International Brotherhood of Teamsters, and the Chicago and Cook County Building Trades.

"The partnerships that have been developed in Illinois on behalf of our veteran community are a leading example of what can be accomplished. There have been concerted efforts and support from Government and Labor to consciously define solutions for our veterans in the workforce community. We will continue to find solutions for those who have honorably served this great nation. We are thankful for this legislation and the work that Senator Crotty and Governor Quinn have done and continue on behalf of our veterans", said Michael Yauger, President of Teamsters Local 786, International Brotherhood of Teamsters.

The bill now moves to the Illinois House of Representatives for consideration.
