Senate Hearings on Long Term Care

A recent three-part Tribune series exposed the dangerous mix of elderly residents and mentally ill felons. The series found incomplete background checks of younger criminals placed in the homes because of their psychiatric disorders, low staffing levels at many of the facilities that admit them, and breakdowns in reporting assaults and other crimes.
In response to these rising concerns, the Senate Public Health and Human Services Committees held a joint hearing on November 5th, 2009 to discuss nursing home safety with state agencies, long term care experts, advocates and the general public.
On this page, you will find documents outlining the testimonies of witnesses who appeared before the joint committee during the hearing. Please click on any of the links below to find information in PDF format.
The members of the Senate Public Health and Human Services Committees hope that you find this information helpful in your understanding of nursing home safety concerns and solutions.
