SPRINGFIELD, IL- The Illinois Senate voted today to create the Massac-Metropolis Port District today, a move that should help bring jobs and economic development to Southern Illinois.

IDOT confirmed late this summer that the nearly $5 million state contract will be awarded to Peter Baker & Son, Co. for work on the 6.52-mile stretch of highway.

"This is one of the major projects funded by the capital construction bill we passed last spring," Forby said. "It’s great that we’ve been able to put people to work so quickly." House Bill 3990 establishes a Local Food, Farms, and Jobs Council. The council will be responsible for ensuring that 20% of all food and food products purchased by state agencies and state owned facilities come from Illinois local farms by the year 2020. Additionally the law will increase the accessibility of fresh produce, grains, meat, dairy and other foods necessary for a well-balanced diet to urban areas.
"I believe it is important to do whatever it takes to put people back to work," said Senator Hunter. "Renewable energy is a relatively new field and Illinois need to be proactive in securing these types of jobs throughout the state."
The Illinois Department of Transportation recently signed off on the $661,000 grant, which will be used to repair and replace streets in the Woods of Antioch subdivision. The concrete streets have been crumbling for three years because of a design flaw that allows rain to seep under the pavement and wash away the road bed.
Senate Bill 1784creates a Port District for Jo Daviess and Carroll Counties. This will provide the district with rights to construct, operate, and maintain port, harbor, water, and land facilities. It also permits the district to enter into any agreement or contract with any airport for the use of its facilities, as well as develop, expand, and construct those facilities as necessary.
