IDOT signs off on $661,000 grant for Antioch infrastructure projects

State Sen. Michael Bond (D Grayslake) and Antioch Mayor Larry Hanson met with homeowners Saturday morning in the Woods of Antioch subdivision to announce they have secured more than half a million dollars in emergency road funds to repair crumbling, poorly engineered streets in the neighborhood.

The Illinois Department of Transportation recently signed off on the $661,000 grant, which will be used to repair and replace streets in the Woods of Antioch. The concrete streets have been crumbling for three years because of a design flaw that allows rain to seep under the pavement and wash away the road bed.

"This has been an ongoing problem in the subdivision," Bond said. "The road conditions are absolutely unacceptable, with concrete literally caving in as these families drive to and from home. I’m just glad we were able to step in before an already significant problem became measurable worse."

Village officials say the road problem has become particularly acute within the last year. Without funding from the state, the Woods of Antioch project would have cost the village the equivalent of approximately four years of motor fuel tax funds.

"I want to extend my sincere thanks to Senator Bond for his efforts on behalf of the village," Hanson said. "We recognized we had a serious problem on our hands, but lacked adequate funding to act in a timely manner. This is in addition to the more than $14 million Senator Bond previously secured to reconstruct and widen Route 83. The senator continues to be a strong advocate for the interests of the people of Antioch."

The village plans to begin construction once they receive the appropriated funding.
