Demuzio bill to help returning veterans with mental health issues signed into law (VIDEO)

Springfield A bill sponsored by State Senator Deanna Demuzio (D Carlinville) that is designed to make it easier for veterans to receive the mental health care they need has been approved by Governor Pat Quinn.

House Bill 6103 states that all veterans who are Illinois residents and are receiving services at a state-operated mental health facility shall not be liable for services not covered by the veteran's existing insurance plans.

"As many veterans and their families know, we have seen a dramatic rise in post traumatic stress disorder diagnoses among returning veterans from our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan," Senator Demuzio said. "It is of utmost importance to ensure that those returning veterans get the care they need."

Senator Demuzio, chair of the Illinois Senate State Government and Veterans Affairs Committee, has made it a priority to do everything possible to ease the transition for returning veterans and to improve the quality of life for those who have served in the military.

"Our returning veterans are destined to become leaders in their communities. By making certain that their health care needs are taken care of, we are investing in our communities’ future, as well as helping those who have fought for freedom worldwide," Senator Demuzio said.
