Today, I am urging my fellow members of the General Assembly who are not currently members of the Historic Preservation Caucus, to join our group and work to preserve the cultural heritage of our state.
The Historic Preservation Caucus is a bipartisan group of both House and Senate members, along with a variety of nonprofit organizations interested in historic preservation in our state.
The Historic Preservation Caucus provides a voice in support of historic preservation and cultural heritage in the Illinois Legislature. We work to promote, preserve and protect Illinois historic structures and sites as well as helping educate and motivate the general public to the importance of maintaining the history of our state.
The Caucus began its work in 2005 and continues to work to ensure our heritage and our history is protected. With over 80 members from both the House and Senate, the Illinois Historic Preservation Caucus is the largest issue-based, bi-partisan caucus in Springfield.
The Caucus works to enact and review legislation that may impact historic preservation. Among the many issues we support are efforts to ensure funding of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency (IHPA), including funding for the maintenance and operation of state historic sites. We also work with the federal Congressional Historic Preservation Caucus regarding federal historic preservation legislation that may impact preservation in Illinois.
One recent victory of the Historic Preservation Caucus is the passage and gubernatorial approval of House Bill 1002, which protects the Illinois Historic Sites Fund and the Presidential Library and Museum Operating Fund from "fund sweeps".
