Springfield, IL- State Senator Rickey Hendon (D-Chicago) held to his commitment of not allowing legislation to pass the legislature this week which would take free rides away from the elderly. Mass transit officials say the free rides for everyone over 55 is costing them too much money, close to three-million dollars a year. However, Hendon contends that if anyone should receive a bailout it should be the elderly.

“They've been paying taxes forever. We give them one little perk, but some want to take it away at a time when we're bailing out Wall Street, bailing out big oil, bailing out the auto industry," said State Sen. Rickey Hendon.

The legislation, House Bill 1597, would means-test the senior ride free program. It proposes the income eligibility limitations set by the circuit breaker program.

“In economic times like these we already know who needs help the most: everyday citizens,” Hendon added. “Nothing has changed since we passed this legislation. Seniors still need to get to work, to see their doctors and run daily errands without financial burden.”

Hendon led the fight for the legislation which gave seniors free rides in 2008.
