Clayborne also spoke about the importance of diversity in Illinois and how it helps to strengthen our local communities. "I believe firmly in contributing to a state that promotes equality of opportunity for all its citizens," said Clayborne. "The citizens of our state have a responsibility to cultivate an understanding and tolerance of diversity. This includes being responsible citizens who are passionate, generous, and maintain the highest standards of integrity." The Teachers’ Retirement System was created by the General Assembly in 1939 for the purpose of providing retirement, disability, and survivor benefits to its participating members. TRS boasts over 165,000 active members.
SPRINGFIELD –Senate Majority Leader James Clayborne (D-East St. Louis) addressed a crowd of 150 particiapnts at the 6th Annual Opportunity Forum this week, hosted by the Teachers’ Retirement System. Clayborne was asked to address the growing concern about state pension systems.
Clayborne spoke first about the need to improve our pension systems by encouraging investment in minority and women-owned business enterprises. This relatively small portion of pension investments has grown significantly in the past few years, creating a substantial amount of capital for its investors.
"Much of our state’s success in this area has come from the decisions and actions of the Teachers’ Retirement System," Clayborn said. "TRS as worked diligently over the past few years to increase the inclusion of woman and minority business enterprises in its investment program. I applaud TRS for placing a great deal of trust and capital in these groups and I hope that they will continue to increase their participation."
