Raoul Announces First Round of Redistricting Hearings

Also announces launch of Redistricting Web site

CHICAGO In the spirit of the recently signed Redistricting Transparency and Public Participation Act, Redistricting Chairman Kwame Raoul is announcing legislative hearings to solicit public input in the redistricting process.

The first hearing will take place March 28, 2011 in Room C600 at noon in the Bilandic Building in Chicago. The Bilandic Building is located at 160 N. Lasalle Street downtown.

Additional hearings will follow on:

April 6, 2011 in Springfield
April 16, 2011 in Kankakee
April 16, 2011 in Peoria
April 19, 2011 in Cicero

"It’s my intent to hold further hearings after these five are wrapped up but more importantly I want to give the public ample notice to participate in our committee proceedings. This is my first redistricting process so I’m going to be eager to hear why various districts were drawn a certain way and their impact on various constituencies. We heard a lot of good testimony during the course of our seven reform hearings last year and I along with my fellow committee members are looking forward to a thoughtful dialogue," Raoul said.

The public is welcome to testify at each of the hearings. Members of the public can also submit maps for the committee record. Specific times and sites will be made available as hearing dates approach.

Raoul is also announcing the launch of the Senate Redistricting Committee Web site. The Web site, which can be found at http://www.ilsenateredistricting.com, contains tools and resources for users as they navigate through the redistricting process. The site contains tabs where users can access census data, learn more about members of the committee, access current maps, helpful links and hearing dates.

Raoul, who paid for the site out of his own pocket, is pleased to offer a one-stop shop for Illinoisans wondering about the committee’s process.
