Senator Edward D. Maloney Bio

Senator Edward D. Maloney brings professional educational experience to the Illinois Senate, as he was both a principal and dean of Brother Rice High School in Chicago before joining the legislature.

Senator Maloney’s background in education has made him a strong chairperson for the Senate Higher Education committee.  As Chairperson, Maloney has brought real world experience to the Senate and has thought of innovative ways to assist students. He has been a fervent advocate for making college more affordable, passing legislation to increase funding for Monetary Award Program Grants for college students and creating the 21st Century Scholars Program to help low-income students receive scholarships at Illinois public institutions.

In 2009, Maloney passed legislation establishing a program that allows Illinois residents to rehabilitate their defaulted student loans.  The plan will help restore credit to more than three thousand Illinois residents who may currently be unable to obtain credit, car loans and mortgages.

Maloney has also been involved in efforts to increase the number of nurses in Illinois.  The severe shortage of nurses in Illinois has created huge staffing problems for hospitals across the state.  Maloney pushed legislation through the General Assembly to provide incentives that will attract more individuals to the profession.

Maloney began his career as a legislator in 1992 when he was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives.  He served as a House member from 1992 to 1993.  He then ran for the Illinois State Senate in 2002 and has served as the Senator for the 18th District from 2003 until present.
