Senator William R. Haine has been a committed public servant ever since serving his country in Vietnam. Throughout his tenure in the Illinois Senate, he has worked tirelessly to deter criminal activity, promote public safety, and improve the lives of citizens in the 56th District and all Illinoisans.
Senator Haine’s background as a State’s Attorney has led to his sponsorship of a variety of legislation directed at protecting the public as a member of the Senate’s Judiciary and Criminal Law Committees. Senator Haine has passed measures requiring sex offenders to register any internet identity, such as an email address or messaging screen name, which the offender uses or plans to use. In addition, he has passed laws restricting parental rights of individuals who have produced meth in the presence of a child and strengthening the tools available for police officers to combat metal theft. He was presented with the Outstanding Legislator Award by the Illinois State’s Attorneys Association in 2009 in recognition of his advocacy for public safety.
In addition, Senator Haine has been a strong supporter of legislation that will improve educational opportunities for children across Illinois. In 2009, he passed legislation that will make schools safer by prohibiting school boards from knowingly employing a person convicted of sex offenses and narcotic offenses. In addition, Senator Haine has sponsored legislation increasing funding for early childhood development programs from birth to age three.
Senator Haine has had a long record of public service leading up to his election to the Illinois Senate in 2002. From 1967 to 1969, Haine served his country in the Vietnam War, where he earned a Bronze Star for his service. In 1988, Senator Haine was elected to the office of Madison County State’s Attorney, an office he held until his election to State Senate. In addition, Senator Haine served as a member of the Madison County Board from 1978 until 1986. He has also served as Chair for the Metro-East Transit District Board of Trustees from 1981 to 1988.
